1) cynic (p. 5) a person who has negative opinions about other people and about the things people do; especially : a person who believes that people are selfish and are only interested in helping themselves
I chose this word because it seems important in understanding the main character, since she declares herself a cynic.

CHARACTER CONFLICT
· Write a paragraph about one example of character vs. character OR character vs. self conflict in Maniac Magee. The conflict can be from Part 1 or Part II. Make sure to use quotes to support which type of conflict you found in the text. Also check to see if you used a topic or introductory sentence in your paragraph. Look at the example of my paragraph from class. Please cite your quotes the way that I cited the text in the example paragraph using quotation marks, parentheses, the author’s name, and a page number. In case you lost your copy of my paragraph, you can find it here.
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
Jerry Spinelli is a master at the use of language. He uses very vivid descriptions and many types of figurative language to draw us into the world of his books. Here are a couple of examples:
· “He loved the early morning. The ‘before-the-workingpeople-time,’ he called it. When even those who went to work the earliest were still sleeping behind the second-story shades. When it seemed as if the whole world had been created just before he woke up on his bedroom floor—the red brick rows of houses, even the windows resting from faces, the cool silent sidewalks and streets. So quiet you could hear the water running far below the sewer grates while the sun shinnied up the rainspouts.” (Spinelli, p. 50) This passage is so vivid! It activiates your sense of smell and sound. It also uses some personification – the sun shinnied, the windows resting.
· “To the ordinary person, Cobble’s Knot was about as friendly as a nest of yellowjackets.” (Spinelli, p. 70) This passage uses a simile to compare the knot to a nest of yellowjackets. Sounds pretty scary to me!
Look back through Part I or Part II of Maniac Magee. Find a passage that really speaks to you, where the author’s use of language really stands out. Write the quote and use proper citations. Then write several sentences explaining why you chose that quote. How did it make you feel? Did you like the words he chose to use? Did you find any of the types of figurative language that we glued into our notebooks? If you cannot find the page of figurative language, click here.
MY FAVORITE PART
· What has been your favorite part of Maniac Magee so far? Why? Did it make you laugh? Cry? Feel strong emotion? Did you relate to the situation somehow?
